New Sustainable Travel: Where Next? Episodes Released for World Environment Day

SEATTLE, WA (June 5, 2024) – Today, Sustainable Travel International released Part 2 of the second season of its Sustainable Travel: Where Next? documentary series in honor of World Environment Day. The four new episodes once again feature inspiring initiatives that are transforming tourism’s impact in destinations around the world, bringing viewers to Galveston (Texas, USA), Austria, Eastern Shore of Virginia (Virginia, USA), and Greater Palm Springs (California, USA).

The short-form documentary films explore solutions that mitigate the damaging effects of tourism, like carbon emissions and beach litter. They tell stories of how destinations are impacted by climate change and showcase their efforts to bolster resilience. Viewers will witness the programs behind the Alps’ first carbon neutral tourism zone, learn how tourist dollars support the protection of Virginia’s fragile barrier islands against sea level rise, discover how immersive art experiences conserve wetlands on Galveston Island, and how a rare plant garden preserves vulnerable cactus species in the Coachella Desert.

The full series now includes a total of 26 episodes. Since its launch in 2022, Sustainable Travel: Where Next? has reached more than 200,000 viewers.

According to UN Tourism, international tourism is expected to recover completely this year, reaching 97% of pre-pandemic levels in the first quarter of 2024. This resurgence underscores the urgent need for sustainable practices to avoid overburdening destinations, the environment, and local communities as visitation grows. Furthermore, 71% of global travelers say they want to leave the places they visit better than they arrived, emphasizing the need for destinations and companies to align their actions with traveler values.

“While sustainable tourism is a growing industry, many travelers have trouble conceptualizing what it really means. This series provides real-world examples to help travelers and tourism professionals better understand why sustainability in tourism is so important,” said Paloma Zapata, CEO of Sustainable Travel International. “We are excited to release new episodes of the series to share more success stories with travel lovers around the world.

Sustainable Travel: Where Next? is produced by Zinc Media Group, an award-winning content creation company honored as Production Company of The Year at the 2024 New York TV & Film Festival.

“Continuing the journey of change and awareness, the next episodes in the second season of Sustainable Travel: Where Next? highlight our ongoing commitment to promoting responsible tourism,” said Elizabeth Fisher-Robins, Series Executive Producer, Zinc Media Group. “We are thrilled to present more fresh narratives from the far corners of the globe, highlighting the tireless efforts of local changemakers and initiatives reshaping the tourism landscape for the better.”

To mitigate the environmental impact of the film, Zinc Media Group will once again be offsetting emissions generated by the film production and investing in climate action by supporting Sustainable Travel International’s Climate Impact Portfolio. This includes a diverse mix of forestry, renewable energy, blue carbon, and innovative climate tech projects that reduce and remove carbon emissions around the world.
