In this video, members of Tanzania’s Indigenous Datooga and Hadza communities share how the Yaeda-Eyasi carbon offset project has helped them protect their land and way of life. “This land has been our home forever. It is part of who we are.”
Carbon revenue supports community-led forest protection, helping prevent land loss to invaders and reducing the need to relocate pastures. Communities are paid to protect their forests, with locally appointed rangers earning stable incomes through carbon finance. As a result, forests are recovering, and benefits such as honey production are increasing. The forests also sustain daily life, providing fruit for food and grazing land that supports livestock. Carbon revenue has also funded essential infrastructure, including schools and health clinics, bringing education and healthcare closer to home.
As German Sedoyeka, the Yaeda-Eyasi Project Manager, recalls: “I once asked a community member what would happen if the carbon project were to leave. He said, ‘If the carbon project were to leave today, the situation would be very bad. Life would be very difficult.’”
The Yaeda-Eyasi Landscape Project is one of the projects in our Climate Impact Portfolio that has been supported by our carbon offset program.
