Tourism in SIDS

Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are a diverse set of countries including some of the world’s most remote and smallest states in the world. SIDS face particular challenges in development and tourism as a result of these shared characteristics, such as limited resources, sensitive environments, vulnerability to climate change, and distance from markets.

Tourism is of particular significance for SIDS as it is a key economic driver in these remote destinations. It is of critical importance for SIDS to invest in the sustainable development of tourism in order to minimise the adverse impacts and maximize its positive benefits. Policy-makers and destination managers play a key role in fostering the transition towards sustainable tourism.

About the Course

This free, 7-week course was developed by Sustainable Travel International and is being offered by Hamburg University of Applied Sciences and the Hamburg Open Online University (HOOU). It aims to address these shared challenges and promote the sustainable development of tourism in SIDS by:

  • Enhancing participant understanding of sustainable tourism development and management
  • Inspiring learners to think carefully and critically about current SIDS’ tourism issues and related tourism policies
  • Enabling participants to assess the opportunities that sustainable tourism strategies offer for SIDS in particular
  • Increasing participant understanding of how policy-making can improve tourism in small island states

The course seeks to form a truly global SIDS learning community, facilitating peer-to-peer interaction and cross-destination knowledge sharing; while drawing from concrete experiences in the Caribbean, Pacific, West African, and Indian Ocean regions. A number of qualified tutors will guide learners along the way, to clarify any issues and provide academic supervision.
