Mexico City, June 7th, 2013.- The National Tourism Confederation (CNT, for its acronym in Spanish) and the MesoAmerican Reef Tourism Initiative (MARTI) signed a cooperation agreement to promote, disseminate and strengthen sustainable tourism operation and development in Mexico. The agreement was signed in the context of a meeting with the Federal Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR) that was following up on tourism proposals that had been presented earlier in the year to Mexico’s President, Enrique Peña Nieto.
MARTI’s General Director, Thomas Meller, and Jorge Hernández Delgado, President of the CNT, developed the agreement with the objective to strengthen the relationship between the two organizations, to join efforts and to define procedures guiding and increasing the collaboration and interaction. Miguel Alemán Magnani, President of Grupo Interjet, and Armando de la Cruz Uribe, President of the Mexican Association of Hotels and Motels, were indicated as witnesses of honor to the signing the document.
The event took place at SECTUR’s offices in Mexico City bringing together representatives from the CNT and the Under-Secretary for Tourism Operations of the Federal Ministry of Tourism, Carlos Joaquín González. Following up on numerous proposals of the tourism sector presented at the beginning of the year to Mexico’s new Federal Government, a progress report generated the discussion of several items with representatives of the Deputy-Ministry for Tourism Operations. The meeting with about twenty participants provided the background for the signing of the agreement between CNT and MARTI
Standing out among the commitments made, is the objective to encourage and boost the implementation of environmental best practices among companies of the tourism industry, whereas the CNT will promote those hotels and tourism service providers that have successfully implemented MARTI’s programs and tools, using the media resources available to the organization.
Another pledge envisions to jointly participate in domestic and international projects to strengthen sustainable tourism operation and development, as well as to support each other, jointly assessing tasks designed to accomplish sustainability in the MesoAmerican Reef Region.
