Senior Director, Standards and Monitoring
With extensive experience in assessment and tourism, Bobby Chappell is leading the development of our Impact Monitoring System. He is also the architect behind the STEP Sustainability Management Systems, a series of cloud-based tools that allows businesses and destinations to report against sustainability standards.
Bobby has worked with hundreds of tourism businesses, overseen 90+ eco-certifications and been project leader on dozens of sustainable development projects with partners such as Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., Hostelling International, Expedia, Innovation Norway, and the Town of Vail, Colorado. Bobby has also contributed to the development of standards and monitoring systems including the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria for Destinations, European Sustainable Tourism Indicators and the Seychelles Sustainability Standard.
Prior to joining Sustainable Travel International, Bobby worked as a wilderness ranger and environmental consultant conducting endangered species surveys, watershed assessments and visitor-use impact studies. He lived and worked in Costa Rica for four years, coordinated study abroad and service learning programs in the South Pacific and was an organic farmer in the US Virgin Islands while completing his graduate thesis in heritage tourism.
