The Caribbean

Waste Management

St. Kitts

Facilitate much needed improvements in St. Kitts’ waste management infrastructure. The project will identify a local waste management partner to reduce pressures on the landfill, build community engagement, and improve the island’s environmental health.

Beach Clean-Ups

St. Kitts

Support regular beach clean-ups to increase community involvement with environmental preservation. The project will also incorporate educational talks to teach locals about the importance of marine and coastal environments and raise awareness of the negative impacts of litter.

Rail-to-Trail Project

St. Kitts

Restore and convert St. Kitts’ iconic sugar railway into a hiking and biking trail. The trail will provide residents and visitors with easier access to historic sites as well as generate tourism opportunities for the local people. This project aims to increase environmental stewardship, raise awareness of local historical sites, and heighten community pride.

Cultural Heritage Map

Antigua & Barbuda

Map cultural heritage sites throughout the twin-island nation and develop a heritage map for the tourism sector. This will help raise awareness and support for local heritage preservation.

Sustainable Tourism Strategy

Antigua & Barbuda

Develop a practical sustainable tourism strategy/blueprint that will outline a shared vision for growth in the destination.

Community-Based Tourism

Antigua & Barbuda

Support the development of a community-based cultural tourism micro-enterprise that will provide new travel experiences to the cruise and hotel sectors. The vision is to establish a model that can be easily replicated.

Solid Waste Management

Barbados

Work with the public and private sector to implement programs that encourage waste separation at Barbados’ ports of entry and major tourist attractions.

Community Engagement

Barbados

Develop and execute a plan that promotes better community engagement within the local tourism industry and encourages development of community-based enterprises and investment in local businesses.

Visitor Satisfaction Survey

Barbados

Revise Barbados’ visitor satisfaction survey to include a broad array of questions that will help the Destination Stewardship Council determine which areas require immediate attention. Create a deployment schedule that is more inclusive of all ports of entry.

Cultural Inventory

Barbados

Create an inventory of the destination’s cultural, natural and traditional knowledge.

Island Branding

Dominica

Create uniform, attractive, branded signage designed to enhance the Dominca’s image as “The Nature Island.” Signage will be placed at key landmarks and villages across the destination.

Solid Waste Management

Dominica

Develop a model waste management plan in the Kalinago Territory to make the region a more attractive destination for community-based tourism.

Food Waste Composting

Dominica

Implement a food waste composting initiative in Roseau, Dominica and its surrounding environs. This project is designed to reduce the amount of waste going to the landfill, lessen business costs, and improve island markets for compost.

Improved Signage

Jamaica

Develop improved directional and interpretive signage, especially in regards to cultural heritage. The purpose of this project is to improve the visitor experience and help visitors understand the rich heritage of Falmouth, Jamaica.

Support Local Businesses

Jamaica

Develop Falmouth, Jamaica as a tourism destination where visitors are satisfied/safe, the community is engaged and that generates economic benefits for the local community through the support micro, small, and medium tourism enterprises.

Waste Management

Jamaica

Improve solid waste management in the town of Falmouth, Jamaica to lead to a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable tourist destination. This project is designed to eliminate the high volume of unprocessed solid waste in the destination.

Heritage Management

Jamaica

Enhance civic awareness and appreciation of Falmouth, Jamaica’s heritage. Promote the preservation of the local history and heritage sites as part of the destination’s tourism product. Organize a first-ever Cultural Heritage Preservation Expo and Festival.

Climate Vulnerability Risk Mapping

The Bahamas

Undertake climate vulnerability risk mapping and implement a public education campaign focusing on the forecasted risks and possible responses for the tourism sector.

Cultural / Natural Heritage Database

The Bahamas

Develop an integrated database of local cultural and natural heritage sites and attractions. The purpose of the database is to provide practical and user-friendly information for site managers as well as other key stakeholders in the tourism sector

Develop new community-based tourism products in historic townships that capture the authentic Bahamian experience.

Local Tourism Product Development

Panama

Help develop additional alternative income opportunities for indigenous communities living in the Veraguas-Coiba marine area to enable them to benefit from tourism and to invest in the protection of their marine and forest resources.

Natural & Cultural Heritage

Honduras

Develop an interpretation program by capturing information about Utila, Honduras’ natural and cultural heritage and make it easily accessible to visitors. This will enhance the tourist and resident experience and improve the destination’s brand.

Water Conservation

Honduras

Increase rainwater harvesting by tourism businesses and residents in Utila, Honduras to help reduce overall extraction from other water sources on the island.

Solid Waste Management

Honduras

Work to improve recycling in Utila, Honduras to lead to healthier ecosystems and a more appealing tourist destination.

Coastal Erosion

Honduras

Mitigate coastline erosion in Utila, Honduras. Coastal zones management and monitoring will help ensure the long-term health of coastal ecosystems.

Strategic Tourism Plan

Nicaragua

Strengthen integrative administration of Ometepe, Nicaragua as a sustainable tourism destination by linking local and national actors to organize, execute, and monitor the island’s strategic plan.

Cultural Heritage

Nicaragua

Work to rescue the intangible cultural heritage of Ometepe, Nicaragua. This will be accomplished by compiling information about culture and traditions, promoting local cultural events, and fostering a love of the arts in youth.

Resource Management

Nicaragua

Reduce levels of contamination of hydrologic sources in Ometepe, Nicaragua. Identify sewage treatment systems. Launch a public awareness campaign about water conservation, water treatment and the associated benefits.

South America

Puerto Natales Recycling Project

Chile

Support the ongoing operation of the first permanent recycling center in Puerto Natales, the gateway community to Torres del Paine National Park. Host educational community activities to raise resident and visitor participation in the recycling program. The long-term goal is to establish a modern recycling facility in Puerto Natales that will service the entire Magallanes region.

Torres del Paine Trail Restoration

Chile

Conduct trail restoration on a segment of the W trail in Torres del Paine National Park. Project activities include clearing trails of rocks and fallen branches, as well as the construction of walking bridges to secure safe passage over gullies that are heavily flooded in the spring.

Asia and Oceania

Local Tour Guide Training

Indonesia

Conduct tour guide training for local residents in Borneo and Sumatra. The training will provide community members with alternative livelihood options by equipping them with the expertise necessary to operate as tour guides in the regions’ protected areas.The project also aims to strengthen local support for conservation efforts by increasing the value associated with neighboring protected areas.

Travel Philanthropy Fund

Samoa

Help establish a travel philanthropy fund in Samoa that will act as a new funding mechanism for small-scale destination sustainability initiatives. The fund will allow visitors and business to play a more active role in improving lives, protecting the environment, and preserving cultural heritage in the island of Samoa.

Sustainable Resource Management in Hotels

Various Pacific Island Countries

Reduce hotel resource use in South Pacific island destinations. Help train small businesses to track their energy, waste and water usage to reduce their impact on small island ecosystems.
