USDA Forest Service Voluntourism Programs

The USDA Forest Service’s Volunteer Program plays a role at a national, regional, and local level, helping to identify, maintain, and inform the public about volunteer opportunities on public lands. Sustainable Travel International is working together with the USDA Forest Service to contribute to the public appreciation and enjoyment of public lands, the sustainability of local communities, and the protection and preservation of the public’s natural, cultural, recreational, and scenic resources through a voluntourism project.

Project Objectives

  • Research on voluntourism
  • SWOT analysis of current USDA Forest Service volunteer products and services
  • Development of a business plan to implement a sustainable Volunteer Tourism Program

Project Outcomes

  • Expanded participation of communities and underserved participants in the National Forest System
  • Positioning of the USDA Forest Service as a leader in volunteer tourism
