Bull Run Overseas
January 2013 – March 2014
The Bull Run Overseas project is a REDD+ that has been verified by both the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and the Climate, Community, and Biodiversity Alliance (CCBA). The specific additionality related to the project is based on the fact that the funds coming in from carbon finance are used to avoid conversion of 666 hectares of broadleaf forest into agricultural land.
The Mountain Pine Ridge is a unique ecosystem in Central America that was devastated by the Southern Pine Bark Beetle blight that occurred from 1998-2002. As an additional component of this project the project developer is practicing Sustainable Forest Management in the region to protect the ecosystem from further blight and natural disturbances (i.e. fire from the tracks of dead trees still standing) as a way to bring the region’s ecological health back to pre-1998 levels.
Sustainable Travel International has spoken with local businesses in the region, professors that study the exotic species in the ecosystem, and the project developer to verify the quality of the ongoing conservation efforts.
